Kids who have the opportunity to be raised with the responsibilities for caring for animals receive valuable lessons on life.
When you stop by the local ranch and take a look at what the ranch kid's life looks like, you will find little time for sitting in front of the game machine!
Animals put demands on kids that otherwise they will not experience until later in life, when all of a sudden, they have to start being responsible, after years of being trained to have nothing expected of them.
Getting up to walk a dog or feed the cat, is better than no experience at all with animals. Many homes today are lacking even this domesticated variety of responsibility.
When we consider why so many homes where children reside are minus a dog or cat, we may just find that the parent is responsible, in that they do not want to tackle the job of teaching their child how to consistently care for an animal.
I have heard many parents argue with their child to, "remember how it was when you said you would care for" ... whatever the earlier chore would have entailed, obviously facing failure. Such reasoning only bounces off the intelligence of the child, as they know that they intend to be responsible.
Should you decide to bring an animal into your home, make plans beforehand to be diligent on your training of your children, that they may learn this lesson as they approach the responsibilities of caring for their animal.
Animals can be great sources of pleasure for a family, as well as living examples of how we need to learn to care for others in our lives.
